New Porgera Limited is continuing to invest in capacity building within its workforce. It has recently invested in certified scaffolding training for a 10-person multi-function cohort.
In a company-first, the 10 team members were certified to the advanced level, following on-site training by Harness Energy.
The training was conducted in October, and saw staff from the mine’s fixed plant maintenance, mobile workshop, and capital projects team progress through basic, intermediate, and finally advanced levels of scaffolding work.
This comprehensive competency-based training provided structured learning and assessment across each level before formal accreditation was granted.
New Porgera senior advisor, employee development Tommy Aselai said upskilling nominated scaffolding team members helped to ensure that staff perform their duties safely and competently across all operational areas.
“This training ensures our teams are fully equipped with the technical knowledge and practical skills required for safe scaffolding operations at all levels,” he said. ” It’s an investment in both safety and sustainability for our workforce.”
Adding to NPL’s internal capacity building efforts, the employee development team has also been in job-specific training. Its trainers attained certificate IV in training and assessment in August this year, and are now preparing for a “train the trainer” program with Harness Energy. This will enable qualified trainers from New Porgera’s employee development to deliver and assess high-risk work courses onsite in the future.
“This next phase will give NPL the capacity to deliver high-risk training internally, ensuring continuous skill development within our workforce for the long-term sustainability of the mine,” Aselai said.
