Harmony Gold Mining has a new group chief executive officer (CEO), with Beyers Nel taking on the top spot from retiring CEO Peter Steenkamp.
Nel has been with the company since 2003, holding various positions including chief operating officer of South Africa. He will be supported by new deputy CEO Floyd Masemula from January 1.
Masemula is currently serving as executive operating officer of Harmony’s South African operations, and will continue his current leadership of these projects.
“Beyers Nel will provide operational continuity along with strong mining leadership and will continue with the excellent work and results that Harmony has been producing under the capable leadership of Peter Steenkamp,” Harmony chairman Patrice Motsepe said.
“Beyers and Floyd, together with the world-class management team at Harmony, will provide operational leadership during the next exciting growth phase of the company.”
Motsepe wished Steenkamp the best for his retirement.
“I also want to express my deep personal gratitude and the gratitude of the Harmony board, its shareholders, employees and stakeholders to Peter Steenkamp for the outstanding leadership that he has provided as CEO of Harmony since 2016,” Motsepe said.
“We wish Peter everything of the best with his new endeavours and he will forever be part of the Harmony family.”
