Barrick Gold and its joint venture partner Zijin Mining Group have donated $US1 million ($1.5 million) to support communities affected by the recent landslide in Mulitaka.
Senior Barrick executives have spent the week in PNG visiting the site and working with government bodies to coordinate relief and recovery.
The nearby Porgera gold mine, operated by Barrick, is also supporting the efforts with manpower at the disaster operations centre in Wabag.
Representatives from the mine delivered much-needed food, medical items and tarpaulins to the village. They have also sourced eight shipping containers to store the supplies, and have dispatched construction personnel to scope the installation of additional structures and water tanks.
“Porgera stands ready to provide additional relief and assistance to support impacted families and communities during this time of need,” Barrick president and chief executive officer Mark Bristow said.
New Porgera Limited have also been called in to help, working with the Enga Provincial Government on temporary measures to bring food and fuel to the communities in Porgera valley.
The company has also mobilised an excavator and bulldozer to assist with clearing, converting a truck to be capable of pulling a float to help transport the equipment.
New Porgera Limited is also looking at the viability of using radar to help with monitoring at the slip site.
The Minerals Resources Authority (MRA) have also stepped up to help those affected, donating K200,000 ($78,100) worth of relief supplies.
Supplies included 600 bags of rice, 400 cartons of tinned fish, 400 cartons of noodles, 200 bales of sugar, and 200 bottles of cooking oil as well as other basic goods.
