The 2024 Ground Probe conference was recently held in Port Moresby, with some of PNG’s biggest miners making an appearance.
Ground Probe was hosted by Orica Geosolutions from November 5–6, with resources giants Ok Tedi Mining (OTML), Harmony Gold, Barrick Gold Corporation, Santos, Newmont and Earth Sciences students from the University of Papua New Guinea attending.
The conference involved the sharing and discussion of geotechnical risks faced by mines in PNG, as well as the use of appropriate risk management tools to mitigate and minimise these risks.
OTML manager mine technical services James Bu gave a keynote speech at the event, emphasising the importance of geotechnical engineers’ roles.
“Integration of different technology and software helps engineers to understand the failure mechanisms and aids to make appropriate risk management decisions,” Bu said.
Orica Geosolutions vice president for Australasia operational excellence Clifford Walsh thanked those in attendance.
“It’s a really important job that you all are doing,” Walsh said. “Orica will do its best to serve you by providing the best technological solutions for open pit and underground mining, tailings dam, and civil infrastructure among others.”
