New Porgera has formally submitted its three-year training and employment plan to the Papua New Guinea (PNG) National Training Council.
The plan, covering 2026 through to 2028, outlines a series of skills training initiatives to support continuous development of the company’s workforce. The strategy has a focus on nationalisation and localisation of the workforce.
New Porgera country manager Karo Maha said the plan was developed in line with national content provisions within the company’s mining development contract.
“The New Porgera three-year training and employment plan includes workforce data, localisation training plans for the three years, which includes succession planning and a trades training program,” she said.
“With Porgera mine now in operation, our focus now turns towards implementing structured capacity building and training initiatives.”
New Porgera human resources manager Adlyn Nagwi said several training programs were already being conducted.
“The implementation of our training and employment Plan is being led by our employee development team, and includes several initiatives which have already commenced onsite in Porgera,” she said.
“These include the NPL Graduate program, Job Ready program, and the Frontline Leadership Program: these form the core of our training initiatives for our workforce.
“Specific training programs will also be developed for the shining stars who are tomorrow’s workforce leaders and managers.”
New Porgera currently has 3055 employees, with only 3 per cent non-PNG citizens. Some 55 per cent of the workforce are from Enga province, of which one third are local specifically to the Porgera region.
Nagwi also noted that the company was determined to increase female participation across its headcount. “10% of our workforce are female and we aim to increase that to 20%,” she said. “New Porgera continues to collaborate with industry to urgently remove the statutory prohibition on women working underground.”
