Ok Tedi Mining (OTML) has welcomed 26 trainees to its ranks after they successfully signed their indenture contracts with the company.
The apprentices were encouraged to do the best they could to excel in their careers.
“The training in this program will equip you to be skilful in your trade,” OTML manager for training capability and development Ian Strachan said.
“Be punctual and learn as much as you can.”
National Apprenticeship Trade Testing Board (NATTB) acting director Brian Clowes echoed similar sentiments, challenging the apprentices to contribute meaningfully to the operation of OTML.
“Follow your supervisors’ instructions and learn as much as you can from Ok Tedi,” he said.
The apprentices will undergo four years of training, including practical placements and block courses. Out of the 26 recruits, 62 per cent are from Western Province.
Trades include auto electrical, cabinet making, carpentry construction, electrical mechanics, heavy equipment fitting, and more.
OTML has recruited 1179 trainees under the apprenticeship program since 1982.
OTML also welcomed the first batch of qualified motor rewinders from its Infrastructure Support Services Rewind Shop in April.
“Its part of OTML’s vision and obligation to up-skill more Papua New Guineans so we produce a qualified and trained workforce for the nation who will continue to contribute to the growing economy,” Infrastructure Support Services manager Akolo Kotange said.
