Ok Tedi Mining has successfully negotiated a community mine continuation agreement (CMCA) with communities surrounding its flagship mine in Western Province.
The agreement covers the years 2026 to 2033 inclusive, and applies to a broad collective of communities including those in the Highway region, North OK Tedi region, Lower Ok Tedi region, and Mine Villages. As well as these land-based regions, there are also water-based regions covered by the agreement, including Kiwaba region, Manawate region, and Dudi region.
The revised agreement builds upon 25 years of collaborative engagement, and encompasses several new initiatives. These include increased compensation and development for CMCA communicated, expanded education and health support initiatives, further environmental safeguards and monitoring, and enhanced representation of churches, women, and youth in the governance frameworks that administer development funding.
The new deal also provides for additional Impact Project Agreements that support identified economic and social development projects within the CMCA regions.
A final signing ceremony was held at Alambak village in Middle Fly region on November 4. Middle Fly Member Maso Hewabi was among the signing delegates, along with Ok Tedi general manager of social performance and sustainability Jesse Pile, who said the CMCA reaffirmed Ok Tedi’s commitment to sustainable development, inclusive decision-making, and the pursuit of shared benefits.
“This agreement reflects our deep respect for the communities that host our operations,” he said. “It’s a testament to the trust we’ve built and our shared vision for a sustainable future.”
