Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) has collaborated with the Migalsim Village Councillor and Village Planning Committee to open a clinic and staff house.
The clinic will play a vital role as a catchment clinic for the Tabubil Hospital and will provide medical services, staff and medical resources.
The clinic and staff house were officially opened on September 14 and the ceremony was attended by OTML managing director and chief executive officer Kedi Ilimbit, board chairman Jeffrey Innes and executive leadership and business partners.
“We must now take ownership and look after the clinic and staff house. It took us a lot of hard work and sacrifice to deliver this critical service,” Village Ward Councillor Roy Meki said.
Ilimbit reflected on the milestone.
“As long as OTML remains operational, we will continue to work with the landowner representative bodies and companies to maximise benefits to the mine villages and surrounding communities,” he said.
“We have already held discussions with the (Tabubil) Hospital on how to extend such benefits to other mine villages as well as other local communities.”
The cost of the project was K$380,000, with the Migalsim Community funding K$100,000. Construction commenced in September 2021.
Migalsim is one of the six mine villages and hosts the Ok Menga Hydro Power Station which supplies around 75 per cent of power to Tabubil Town, and Ok Tedi’s mill and mining operation.
