The Ok Tedi Mining (OTML) 2024 Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme has supported 10 University of PNG students with a funding commitment totalling over K300,000 ($121,000).
The 10 scholarship recipients are all in their third year of study in disciplines including geology, biology, environmental science, engineering, mineral processing and more.
The scholarship covers full tuition and boarding for the year, a book allowance and stipend, travel assistance, industrial training and an automatic offer into the two year graduate development program upon completion of studies.
“The Undergraduate Scholarship Award Scheme is an initiative of OTML to help support high performing students attending tertiary institutions in PNG that offer disciplines relevant to OTML work areas,” OTML said.
“The program aims to assist university undergraduate students with school fees and other associated costs while ensuring OTML maintains an industry-institution relationship with respective universities that provide graduates into its training programs and workforce.”
The program first started in 2007 and was reintroduced in 2023 following a hiatus in 2014.
So far, OTML has invested K830,000 ($329,753) in the program, sponsoring 60 undergraduate students.
The month of March has seen OTML focus on apprenticeships and education, with the company welcoming 22 new apprentices to its apprentice training program this year.
The apprentices have been enrolled in trades including auto electrical, carpentry, cabinet making and joinery, electrical, heavy equipment fitter, maintenance fitting and machining, metal fabrication and welding, plumbing and refrigeration and air-conditioning.
