Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) has supported the University of Papua New Guinea’s (UPNG) earth sciences division through a PGK$5000 donation.
OTML also hosted the 2023 UPNG Geosciences Open Day on October 6, marking the second successive year the event has been held.
“The last open day was held in the late 1990s, (then) in 2022, we had our first Geosciences Open Day, and this year’s event will mark the second successive Geosciences Open Day,” Associate professor and head of the earth sciences division Joseph Espi said.
“We are immensely grateful to OTML, under the leadership of chief executive officer and managing director Kedi Ilimbit for their unwavering support.”
Ilimbit said that he is proud of OTML’s involvement.
“OTML is proud to be part of this milestone, and we look forward to continuing this partnership to inspire the next generation of geoscientists,” he said.
OTML’s involvement with UPNG is just one of a number of ways that the miner gives back to the PNG community.
In September, it collaborated with the Migalsim Village Councillor and Village Planning Committee to open a clinic and staff house which will play a vital role as a catchment clinic for the Tabubil Hospital and will provide medical services, staff and medical resources.
“As long as OTML remains operational, we will continue to work with the landowner representative bodies and companies to maximise benefits to the mine villages and surrounding communities,” Ilimbit said at the time.
