Ok Tedi Mining (OTML) has shown its support for the Kiunga Catfish rugby league team with a donation in preparation for the Agmark Sepik 9’s rugby league tournament.
OTML donated $K5000 to the team to fund its journey to the tournament in the east Sepik province, which took place on November 24–25.
The Kiunga Catfish rugby league team consists of players hailing from across the districts of western province.
Accepting the award on behalf of the team were technical officer Senior Dumo, medical officer Roland Kevin and trainer and captain Lynton Tube.
“The aim is to represent the province, expose our players to a higher level of competition, and hopefully they catch the eye of selectors for any of the Digicel Cup franchises,” Dumo said.
The financial injection from OTML is not the only support the Kiunga Catfish has received.
Other organisations have rallied behind the team, providing additional funding for their participation and contributing to the purchase of their uniforms.
As the league of 20 teams geared up for the tournament, the Kiunga Catfish aimed to represent its province and showcase the talent of the team.
This year’s men’s cup winner will walk away with $K25,000, while the runner up will settle for $K15,000.
In the Women’s division the cup winner will take home $K10,000 while the runner up will walk away with $K5,000.
