Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) has committed to supporting PNG University of Technology (PNGUoT) mining graduates in becoming “industry ready”.
Speaking at PNGUoT’s orientation and registration week this month, OTML managing director and chief executive officer Kedi Ilmibit said fostering a relationship with the university is vital.
“This is the special bond that OTML has with PNGUoT as many of our professionals in the mining, processing, engineering, communication for development, accounting, computer sciences fields and many others have come through this great institution,” he said.
Ilimbit announced a host of projects OTML is progressing as a commitment to the university.
OTML will make a donation of five light vehicles to the university, as well as building a state-of-the-art analytical chemistry laboratory facility.
The company will also donate K100,000 for the development of a technology transfer centre, aid final year students through, and assist with changes in, the industrial training placements program, and collaborate on knowledge and skills sharing with the university.
The OTML board agreed in September 2023 to extend the Ok Tedi mine’s life to 2050, with the potential to extend even further.
The extension is expected to generate over K30 billion in social benefits including taxes, royalties, and dividend payments over the next 26 years.
“What does this mean for you students? This means training and employment opportunities will continue to be available,” Ilmibit said in his address to students.
“Despite the availability of opportunities, a lot is dependent on student performances. We look for good GPA across the disciplines we would like to hire.
“Therefore, the onus is upon each one of you seated here today to do your best whilst you journey through your academic life.”
