Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) has consistently backed education through scholarships and funding.
Scholarships
OTML awarded 10 university students scholarships this month in a scheme totalling over K300,000 ($115,455).
The scholarships were awarded to third-year students studying a variety of courses, including human resources management, applied psychics, mining engineering and environmental health.
Students who received the scholarships will have their tuition fees, lodging, book allowances and travel assistance covered, while also receiving a stipend.
“An additional component of this scholarship is the opportunity for these awardees to conduct their industrial training with OTML,” OTML manager training and capability development Ian Stratchan said. “It also sets a pathway for them to join our Graduate Development Program upon completing their studies.”
Students must maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or above to continue the scholarship for the fourth and final year of their studies.
Computer laboratory
February has been a big month for OTML, with the miner also handing over a fully refurbished computer laboratory at the University of Papua New Guinea’s (UPNG) Earth Sciences Division and Centre for Disaster Risk Reduction.
In total, 28 new desktops, seven laptops and a 20 kilovolt-amperes uninterruptible power supply device was presented to the division.
The division had previously relied on just six desktops to serve is 67 students.
“As part of achieving OTML’s Growth 2050 Strategy goal, we are building strategic and sustainable partnerships,” OTML manager mine technical service James Bu said.
“We realise the importance of engagement and collaboration with the universities, because we want to develop and groom future mining leaders to help OTML achieve its Growth 2050 strategy.”
Associate Professor Joseph Espi thanked the OTML team for its partnership.
“I am so proud in saying that Ok Tedi is a nationally owned company that is focused in helping us the university produce high quality graduates that are industry ready,” he said.
