The offerings of Atlas Steel PNG have gone from strength to strength in the country’s mining sector.

Atlas Steel PNG has cemented its position as a key player in the country’s mining industry, offering a complete steel fabrication service that meets the demands of Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) largest and most remote operations.

With decades of experience in the steel sector, Atlas Steel PNG has evolved from a raw materials supplier into a one-stop fabrication solution for the PNG mining industry and beyond.

“We design and fabricate everything from conveyor galleries to hoppers and chutes, structural steel for mine site buildings, haul truck structural maintenance, as well as dongas and fencing,” Atlas Steel PNG branch manager Peter Browne told PNG Mining.

“In fact, anything used on a mine site that is steel‑based, we can supply.”

This capability stems from a strategic decision to close a critical market gap.

“There was a gap in the market, particularly in the design and certification of steel buildings,” Browne said.

“Customers should not have to search overseas for fabricated steel, so, in stocking every steel section that is used in fabrication, we decided to value-add these products and supply them fully designed and fabricated.”

Atlas Steel PNG now delivers an end-to-end fabrication solution that includes design, certification, full trackability of all steel used, fabrication, welding to AS1554SP and ASME IX standards as needed, and full grit blast and protective coatings applied to specification.

This full-service offering has made the company a go-to supplier for major players in the industry.

“We have been supplying fabricated steel to Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) for many years,” Browne said.

“We also supply fabricated steel to the Porgera and Lihir mines, along with many others.”

One of the standout advantages of working with a local fabricator is responsiveness.

“We can offer an extremely quick turnaround, which is vital to mine production,” Browne said. “We are also very cost competitive.”

But it’s not just about mining. While the company has deep roots in the resources sector, it is increasingly expanding its services into new markets.

“Miners are realising that we can provide any steel service that they require,” Browne said. “We are servicing not only the PNG mining sector but also a large cross section of other industries.”

Looking ahead, the company is focused on continuing to broaden its offerings to meet the evolving needs of clients.

“We at Atlas feel that offering the fabricated steel option to our product range is complementary to our total mining offering,” Atlas Steel PNG general manager John McCarthy told PNG Mining.

This offering includes far more than just steel beams and bolts.

“We also offer fully designed, manufactured and constructed accommodation blocks, storage sheds, offices, as well as Allshelter temporary structures,” McCarthy said.

“This is alongside underground mining consumables such as rock bolts, drilling consumables, and a complete range of steel products and accessories.”

In a country where access and speed are crucial to project success, Atlas Steel PNG is proving that world-class fabrication doesn’t have to come from overseas. It can be sourced right here, locally engineered and fabricated to the highest standards.

As the mining sector continues to play a vital role in PNG’s economy, partners like Atlas Steel PNG are ensuring the foundations are quite literally built from the ground up – with strength, speed, and local know-how.
