Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) has opened its new mine operations workshop, which will primarily service its new fleet of electric trucks.
Named “Workshop 50″ in honour of Papua New Guinea’s 50th anniversary of independence, the purpose-built facility will complement the recent addition of XDE 260 XCMG trucks.
The trucks are used in mining operations to haul ore and wastes from the mine to the crusher and waste dumps respectively. OTML is operating 10 of the trucks currently, and anticipates receiving another five before the end of the year.
Workshop 50 has been designed and fitted out with the XCMG electric trucks at top of mind, and will improve operational efficiency and reduce downtime throughout OTML’s mining operations. It features a 50-tonne crane and a lube facility as additional to the original design, which were made possible through project contingencies and cost optimisations.
OTML manager of mobile maintenance Tommy Mambu said the project was still completed within its set budget, with the investment reflecting the company’s continuous commitment to innovation and operational excellence.
“The new Mine Operations Workshop gives us the capacity and capability to properly maintain our electric truck fleet, ensuring safe, reliable and efficient operations,” he said.
“It is another important milestone as we modernise our mining fleet and invest in the long-term future of our operations.”
OTML general manager of operations Ben Burger said the new workshop aligned with OTML’s 2050 growth strategy.
“The new workshop will primarily benefit the mine maintenance department, but its impact will extend across the broader Ok Tedi business by enabling more reliable fleet performance,” he said.
